A 4-H Educator will visit your classroom with an hour lesson and, in most instances, a hands-on project.
ALL PROGRAMS ARE $10.00 per teacher/class unless otherwise specified.

NUTRITION

Mystery Box - Julie Curren

Grades K-3

As children pick different produce from the Mystery Box, they will identify and categorize them as fruits or vegetables.  A  NEW Food Guide Pyramid game and a healthy snack round out the program.

Are You Label Able? - Diane Whitten

Grades 4-6

Using cereal box labels , students will work in groups to analyze calories, nutrients, fiber and sugar content.  Hands-on activity will help students visualize serving size.

 

You are What You Eat - Diane Whitten

available all year

Grades 4-6

Students will be shocked at how much fat is in the food they are eating.  We will discuss how we can be eating healthier so that we can "eat better" to "feel better" to "do better".  Recipes for nutritional snacks that they can make themselves will be handed out.

SAFETY

Bicycle & Skating - Cindy Dort & Lisa Millis

available March 1 - April 30

Grades K-2

Students will learn the importance of bike safety through an interactive program.  The program will emphasize the rules of the road, road hazards, and the importance of helmet use.  To further enhance this program an actual bike rodeo and helmet fitting station can be conducted at your school outside of school hours.  Contact the educator to schedule a rodeo.

PLANT and ANIMAL LIFE SCIENCE

Birds in Your Backyard - Julie Curren

Grades K-4

In a center-based program utilizing interactive games children learn about bird's specialized body parts and identify common winter birds and their songs.  Make a bird food necklace to feed the birds in YOUR backyard.

Can You Dig It? - Julie Curren

available March 1 - April 30

Grades K-2

A hands-on in-depth look at soil, seeds, and techniques used in gardening.  Children will plant their own seeds.  This is a "hands-on" program.  Please have a broom accessible.

Monarchs in the Classroom - Julie Curren

School Year 2008-2009                    available Sept. 9 - Oct. 31

Grades 1-6

Get Monarch Larvae to raise in the classroom.  An Educator comes to the classroom and shows a movie from the larvae's perspective, leads an interactive age appropriate discussion about the life cycle and children participate in a physical migration game.  Children will tag and record information for University of Kansas conservation and research program.

Large indoor space needed in case of inclement weather.   
Fee: $15.00 FOR PROGRAM, $.25 per tag.

Who Eats My Garbage? ~ Julie Curren

available Jan. 1 - Feb. 29

Grades K-3

A classroom sized Vermicomposting bin is loaned to the classroom.  Teachers are given care information.  Children experience the process of recycling food over time.  An Educator conducts science experiments with the class using the scientific process.

Bluebirds in New York ~ Julie Curren

4/17 or 5/7 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Grades 2-6

Come to the 4-H Training Center for a Bluebird Conservation Workshop.  Get information, see a movie, walk the 4-H Bluebird Trail, view nesting pairs and build a Bluebird Nest Box to take home. 3 Nest Boxes included with the program.  Bring a bag lunch and eat with the birds.

FEE: $10/classroom   Additional Nest Box Kits $10 or 3 for $25

Incubation and Embryology ~ Dave Leggett

 

Grades K-6

This program provides an opportunity for students to experience the incubation, development, hatching and brooding or chicks.

Session 1 - Pick up and training day - March 4 @ 4:30 pm
Session 2 - Pick up and training day - April 22 @ 4:30 pm

Fee: $10 deposit for incubator, $5 non-refundable service fee and $8 per dozen eggs.
         $10 per dozen, non-refundable, for eggs only.

 

SARATOGA COUNTY HERITAGE

Through a Child's Eyes ~ Julie Curren

available March 1 - April 30

Grades 4-6

A child's perspective of Saratoga County in the 1800's.  A look at school, home, work, play and other aspects of daily life.  A presenter will come in costume with a life-size board game, one room schoolhouse props and lesson, as well as a chest of heritage toys.  Children will make a toy of their own to keep.

EARTH SCIENCE

Sciencing with Seismology ~ Julie Curren

Grades 3-6

A hands-on program consisting of learning about seismic waves, seismographs, and designing structures in different ground conditions.  Students will work in groups to discover seismology.

Borrow a box of useful props to teach children how to be safe.  The box contains a fun musical video, activities to help youth identify poisons and stickers to put on those "tricky' poisons.
